 About the Oakland Aviation Museum

• Educate about the role of historic North Field at Oakland International Airport, Oakland and the Bay Area in the development of aviation on the West Coast and in the US by collecting, preserving and interpreting aircraft and aviation artifacts that reflect this proud heritage.
• Celebrate
the history and technological achievements of aviation.
• Inspire
individuals by linking aviation’s past to the future.

Oakland Aviation Museum was founded in 1981 as a non-profit organization under IRS Code 501 C (3) under the name of Western Aerospace Museum. The museum's first home was a small room at Hangar 5 at Oakland International Airport's historic North Field. In 1988, the Museum was granted use of the historic Boeing School of Aeronautics hangar built in 1939. The hangar serves as the primary facility of the Museum, providing indoor and outdoor exhibition space, an education room, a History Flicks room, a research library and aircraft restoration work areas.  In 2007, Western Aerospace Museum was renamed Oakland Aviation Museum with the historical mission refocused on the important legacy of flight at North Field and the surrounding area.

We are proud to be a continued partner with the Port of Oakland and Oakland International Airport in preserving and presenting the East Bay's history of flight.

The collection at the Oakland Aviation Museum is quite varied and extensive for its size.  Of the many artifacts housed in the museum, the aircraft are always of particular interest to our visitors.  Below are images and information regarding some of the many aircraft in the collection.

Short Bros. Solent MkIII Flying Boat
This amazing aircraft is one of only three of its type remaining in the world today - it was featured in the movie 'Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark!'  It flew for British Overseas Air Company between 1949 and 1951 on the schedule from South Hampton, England to Johannesburg, South Africa.  Along the route, it stopped at exotic locations such as Augusta, Sicily, Luxor, Egypt and Lake Victoria in central Africa.  This flight was the epitome of luxury travel and the food and accommodations along the way were equally luxurious.

OAM looks forward to your visit so you can have the opportunity to see these amazing aircraft and the entire collection up close. Other fascinating aircraft in OAM's collection include:

Douglas KA-3B Skywarrior
Douglas TA-4J Skyhawk
Grumman KA-6D Intruder
Vought A-7E Corsair II
North American T-39 Sabreliner

Glasair SH-2
Rutan Varieze
Kitfox Classic IV
Ison 1650R Eros
Mauro Ultralight Easy Riser
